Federal Express
Federal Express: Around the World
Federal express, commonly called FedEx, is a courier company that offers courier, ground, LTL, heavy freight, document copying and logistics services.
History
The company was founded in the year 1972 in Arkansas, but in 1973 moved to Tennessee. The name was selected as a technique to target the national market, and to attract government contracts. FedEx officially started its operations in April 1973. FedEx’s cargo airlines expanded greatly after they pushed through the deregulation of cargo airlines. By using the hub-spoke distribution model in airfreight, FedEx became a world leader in its field. The Memphis hub is used to operate most of the freight hubs. The other hubs in United States are at the following locations:
- Indianapolis
- Newark
- Oakland
- Anchorage
- Fort Worth
- Greensboro
- Toronto Pearson International Airport
In 1989, FedEx acquired the historical “Flying Tiger Line” with the intention of expanding internationally. FedEx inherited their US military transport contract, valid until 1992. In 1998, the company acquired Caliber System Inc. and became FDX Corp.
